Our dog "trooper" (Weimaraner) made his first bust today. We went over to our lease in the town of Solon, which connects to Baker Schoolhouse State Forest, Plenty of room to work a dog. We had only walked in three-four hundred yards, and I spotted a flock up ahead of us on another logging road. I walked him over to the roadway, and that was all it took. Once he hit fresh scent, Trooper was on a mission. 12-13 birds (mixed flock) He got all the birds up in the air, and I think he came close to catching a few, as they went straight up in the trees. No bark on this break, hope we can do something about that. I got him to settle down behind a stake blind, and called birds in. Funny, I scolded him for low volume growling as I had birds out in front kee-keeing, Second time he growled, I turned to look, and had the two jennies coming in from behind. I managed to turn around, and shoot the bigger one off hand. Trooper had no problem with the shotgun blast. At the shot, the second bird ran towards us. I could have shot, but the birds were small to start with. Tooper went after it, flushing the bird. I believe there were a few more with the two, just could not see them.

Trooper Turns 10 months old on Monday, and I could not be more pleased with him. We have a lot more training to do, but he did well today. Trooper had a ball, and is passed out as I type this.

Spent the past four days fishing Black Lake and can only offer a very short report! Hopefully we just hit it at a bad time and the lake is not as dead as it appears! I boated around 15 bass, 0 walleyes and a handfull of assorted junk fish. It was so exciting that we actually went golfing on Sunday afternoon! I hadn't fished there in at least 20 years so we were pretty much learning the lake as we went. It's a beautiful body of water and the cabins were great. Too bad the fishing wasn't a bit better! Oh well.. the river starts soon! Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)

Sewage plant discharge into river under investigation

Power disruption blamed

By Eric Reinagel
Press & Sun-Bulletin

VESTAL -- The Binghamton-Johnson City Joint Sewage Treatment Plant is being investigated for an incident that resulted in raw sewage being discharged into the Susquehanna River for about six hours.

Plant Superintendent Catherine Aingworth, who is heading the internal portion of the investigation, said that at 11 p.m. Sept. 14, a power anomaly caused a computer control system to shut down pumps bringing sewage into the plant from Binghamton.

While the pumps were down, Aingworth said, the system backed up and an emergency release automatically discharged the sewage into the river.

The submersible pumps were turned back on at 5 a.m. after an employee noticed lights in the scrubber building were out. However, the pumps are housed in another building that seemed to have power, Aingworth said.

If the two third-shift workers noticed the pumps weren't working, it is likely they could have brought them back on line almost immediately, Aingworth said.

It's not known how much sewage was discharged into the river, but Aingworth said that typically, the flow is low at that time.

An initial investigation led to disciplinary action against one employee, said Aingworth, who declined to name the employee or to say if the employee had been fired.

Sewer board member Edward Crumb said New York State Electric and Gas Corp. is being questioned about the power disruption. He said NYSEG delivers electricity to the plant from two sources and the supply is supposed to be uninterrupted.

NYSEG Spokesman Bob Pass said Wednesday he needed more time to research the incident and didn't have a response.

Once the shutdown was discovered, pumps were turned on from the computer control system, Aingworth said.

The Department of Environment Conservation also is investigating the incident but has taken no action, spokeswoman Diane Carlton said.

I don't know how many of you use a kayak, but I have a friend that uses one quite often & when I went on the beach today, had one with a sail on it.

While I was there, he paddled out & started getting ready to sail & got the sail filled, then a gust of wind turned the kayak over. At the very first, I didn't realise that he didn't have any lifejacket on until he started flapping around trying to get on the kayak & couldn't. The breeze was offshore enough that he was going out & the water was 54 degrees & after a couple of minutes I looked down the beach & saw a small boat coming with 2 guys in it. I went to the water's edge & waved my arms & pointed until they got to my friend & rescued him. If they hadn't been there, I believe the outcome would have been MUCH different- & I wouldn't be sitting here in as good a mood as I'm in.

After he came in, I asked him where his floatation was & he said "In the hull- strapped securely under the bungee cords so I wouldn't lose it." I just said "Good place for it, huh?"

He realizes that he almost died this afternoon & WILL wear his jacket from now on. That's why I wrote this- DON'T be slack when safety's concerned, 'cause your life might depend on it!

DEC Opens New Areas to Bear Hunting in Central and Western N http://www.ny-outdoors.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1398 http://www.ny-outdoors.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1398

DEC Opens New Areas to Bear Hunting in Central and Western New York
Changes Effective for Upcoming Season

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis today announced that the state has adopted regulations that open new areas to black bear hunting this fall. The new regulations expand bear hunting to 13 additional Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), which include parts of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Wyoming, Genesee, Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario, Seneca, Yates, Steuben, Schuyler, Tompkins, Tioga, Cortland, Broome, Chenango, Madison, Onondaga, Oneida, and Otsego counties.

The regulations are in effect immediately and will allow hunters to pursue bears in these areas during the bowhunting, regular, and muzzleloading bear hunting seasons in the Southern Zone. An updated map of New York's bear hunting seasons is available at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28602.html . A map and boundary descriptions of DEC's Wildlife Management Unit locations can be found at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8302.html.

"In recent years, the bear population in central and western New York has grown in number and expanded in distribution," Commissioner Grannis said. "Hunting is an important component of a comprehensive bear-management program that also emphasizes safety and education efforts and responses to individual problem bears. Expanding the bear hunting area is a continuation of efforts to manage bear population growth and range expansion."

Black bears have been thriving in New York, with a current population of approximately 6,000-7,000 - a number that has grown significantly over the last decade. This conservative estimate includes about 4,000-5,000 bears in the Northern Bear Range, about 2,000 bears in the Southern Bear Range, plus several hundred bears outside the primary ranges. In recent years, bears have expanded their range considerably, which has led to a growing number of interactions between bears and people.

The specific changes for the Southern Bear Range include:

Open WMUs 7M, 7R, 7S, 8H, 8J, 8M, 8N, 8P, 8R, 8S, 9G and 9H to black bear hunting for the bowhunting, regular and muzzleloading seasons. This would include parts of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Wyoming, Genesee, Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario, Seneca, Yates, Steuben, Schuyler, Tompkins, Tioga, Cortland, Broome, Chenango, Madison, Onondaga, and Oneida counties. Season dates for these units will be the same as those in place for adjacent units already open to bear hunting in the Allegany bear hunting area, with bowhunting season starting on Oct. 18, 2008, and regular bear season beginning Nov. 22, 2008.

Open WMU 4N to black bear hunting for the bowhunting, regular and muzzleloading seasons. This includes parts of Chenango and Otsego counties. The season dates for this unit will be the same as adjacent areas to the east in the Catskill bear hunting area with bowhunting season starting on Oct. 18, 2008, and regular bear season beginning Nov. 15, 2008.
The commissioner reminded hunters that they must report the taking of a black bear to DEC. "Not only is the reporting of a bear by a hunter required by the Department's regulations, it is a vital component of our black bear management program," Grannis said. Successful bear hunters must report the taking of a black bear and may do so by calling 1-866-GAMERPT (1-866-426-3778) or through DEC's new online reporting system.

While bear hunting is the most viable and cost-effective tool for managing bear populations, opening new areas to hunting will not eliminate bears or prevent all human/bear interactions. For this reason, DEC remains committed to continuing educational outreach to increase the public's awareness and inform the public on techniques to avoid conflicts with bears. The recently-produced "Living with New York Black Bears" DVD is available to the public for loan at local libraries and DEC wildlife offices, and is currently being distributed to school libraries throughout the state. A wealth of information about bears can also be found on DEC's website.

DEC Adopts New Freshwater Fishing Rules for 2008-2010 Seasons

Changes to Become Effective October 1, 2008

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis today announced the finalization of changes to freshwater fishing regulations for the 2008-2010 seasons. These new regulations will become effective on October 1, 2008, and enhance fishing opportunities for anglers across New York.

"New York continues to provide some of the nation's best fishing opportunities, and these regulation changes are intended to enhance angler satisfaction, while also protecting New York's precious fishery resources," Commissioner Grannis said. "During our public comment period on the draft regulations, DEC received many helpful comments from anglers and other stakeholders, with some suggestions incorporated into the final changes announced today. We look forward to continuing together to protect our fisheries and improve fishing opportunities."

A woman from Los Angeles, who was a tree hugger and an anti-hunter, purchased a piece of timberland, near Grants Pass, OR. There was a large tree on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top she encountered a spotted owl that attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got many splinters in her crotch.

In considerable pain, she hurried to the nearest doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist and an anti-hunter and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go into the examining room and he would see if he could help her. She sat and waited three hours before the doctor reappeared. The angry woman demanded, 'What took you so long?'

He smiled and then told her, 'Well, I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a recreational area. I'm sorry, but they turned me down.'
